Top 10 largest forests in the world

We are living in that world where we can not underestimate the primacy of forests. The air, we inhale and the wood, we utilized, in both examples, we rely on forests. They also provide habitats to the animals. Besides it, they protect us from soil erosion and climate change. In climate transition, forests play a crucial function. Almost 2.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide, which is released from fossil fuel burning and other processes, is absorbed by forests every year. Forest degradation is the main cause of the recent climate change issue that the world is facing. The maintenance of forests is, therefore, a fundamental solution to this problem.  Here we are demonstrating the top 10 biggest forests of the earth.

Top 10 largest forests in the world

10. Mindo-Nambillo Cloud Forest

Mindo-Nambillo is the world's tenth-largest forest that covers a 19,000 hectares area. It is placed near Mindo village. It is remarkable due to the existence of an enormous volume of bird species. Mindo forest is more prominent among eco-travelers due to its tremendous diversity.

9. Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Sinharaja Forest reserve is located in southwest Srilanka. It wraps almost 8,864 hectares and is connected on three sides by rivers. Sinharaja Forest is prominent due to the presence of endemic species. Almost 60% of trees are endemic. Its conservation is under threat due to the construction of hotels and roads. Its conservation is crucial because it is the last sediment of the Srilankan lowland rainforest.

8. Kinabalu National Park

Kinabalu Park, the world's eighth-largest forest, is located on the northern side of Borneo island. It covers a diverse habitat, from hill rainforest to sub-alpine forest. Many plant species such as Flora, from the Himalayas, China, and Malaysia, are present in this area. Due to the huge biodiversity, this forest become a destination for tourists. It has been bestowed "World Heritage Site" status by UNESCO.

7. Daintree Forest

Daintree forest is one of the world's biggest distinct forests that is present in Australia. Its freekling vines and canopy are approximately 180 years ancient. It is named after an Australian geologist, Richard Daintree. It is a habitat for 30% of Australian frogs and 65% of butterflies. It is the only area in the world that connects the two heritages, the rainforest and the reef.

6. Sundarbans

Sundarbans forest is present across India and Bangladesh. It spreads about 10,000 sq km of which 40% is present in Indian territory. It is the habitat of wildlife species like an estuarine crocodile, Bengal tiger, and Gangetic Dolphin. Besides the habitat of wildlife, it is also a susceptible area where 4.5 million people live. To secure the future of Sundarbans it is necessary to formulate conservation strategies that support biodiversity and ecosystem. The Sundarbans is also considered as largest forest in Asia.

5. Rainforest of Xishuangbanna

Xishuangbanna forest is located in China. It is enriched with a lot of species such as wild animals and plants. It also contains endangered species. About 90% of Chinese elephants are present in this area. Besides it, the forest is a homeland of 880,000 people. Tourism has been widely increased, almost 10.82 million tourists since 2004. This area is also a biodiversity hotspot for the world.

4. Tongass

Tongass is the world's fourth-largest forest present in Southeast Alaska. It is the habitat of eagles, spawning salmon, and beers. Covering an area of 17 miles, Tongass is a part of the largest intact temperature rain forest. It is also recognized as the "Crown Jewel" of forests of the United States. According to the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council, it consists of 1000 years old spruce and hemlock trees. Also, it furnishes habitats for animals and humans. It protects the ecosystem by absorbing a large amount of carbon dioxide than any other forest in the US.

3. Valdivian Temperate Rainforest

The Valdivian temperate rainforest is present in the southern cone of South America. It bridges the gulf between the western slope of the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. The maximum temperature in this region is 13°C to 21°C while the minimum temperature is 4-7°C. It is also famous due to the presence of the endangered tree, Fitzroya cupressoides, the largest tree that can exist for up to 3600 years.

The Valdivian forest is under threat for many years due to its usage for commercial purposes and also for firewood. Some of its areas are also deforested due to the formation of roads such as the Southern coastal highway. Besides it, the trading of endemic species is a threat to the local biodiversity.

2. Congo Rainforest

Congo Rainforest is the world's second-largest rainforest that covers 107 million hectares of area. It is a part of six countries around which the maximum area is in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is famous for its huge biodiversities such as 600 tree species and 10000 animal species. Chimpanzees, leopards, and lions are tenants of this rainforest. Trees in the Congo rainforest are larger as compared to that of the Amazon rainforest, therefore storing more carbon.

1. Amazon Rainforest

Amazon rainforest is the world's largest rainforest present in South America. It balances the global climate by encompassing 90-140 billion tons of carbon dioxide.

Amazon contains a variety of species and unusual wildlife. It is a habitat of 10% of world's wildlife species. Almost 73,000 km of land was burnt in 2019's fire across Brazil. Besides it, Amazon is a homeland of 24 million people. People around the Amazon forest rely on it for food, water and other purposes. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
